For a single room or home office, a wall-mounted split aircon is usually the best value: cheaper to buy and install, quick to fit and easy to service. For larger open-plan offices, shops and restaurants, a ceiling cassette spreads air in four directions for more even cooling and keeps walls free, but it costs more and needs ceiling space and careful installation. Size the unit to the room, choose an inverter model for running costs, and plan the outdoor unit, drain and power before installation. Absolute Repairs installs both across Gauteng.
The short comparison
| Wall-mounted split | Ceiling cassette | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Bedrooms, home offices, single offices, small shops | Open-plan offices, shops, restaurants, large rooms |
| Airflow | One direction, from one wall | Four directions, from the middle of the ceiling |
| Cost | Lower unit and installation cost | Higher unit and installation cost |
| Installation | Quick: mounted on a wall, short pipe run | More involved: hung from the slab or fitted into a ceiling void |
| Wall space | Uses wall space | Keeps walls free for shelving, screens and displays |
| Servicing | Easy to reach | Needs a ladder and ceiling access |

When a wall split makes sense
For a home office or a single room, a wall split is hard to beat. It's affordable, quick to install and simple to service. The key is placement: high on the wall, ideally blowing across the room rather than straight at your desk or chair.

In this Essexwold home office, we mounted the unit between the window and the cornice. Because the room was full of paperwork and electronics, one technician drilled the pipe hole while the other held a vacuum at the drill bit to catch the dust.

When a ceiling cassette is better
In a large open space, one wall unit cools the area near it well and the far side poorly. A cassette sits in the middle of the ceiling and pushes air out on all four sides, so the space cools more evenly. It also leaves the walls free, which matters in shops and offices full of shelving, screens or displays.

On this commercial fit-out in Kempton Park, there was no suspended ceiling, so we hung the cassette from the slab on threaded rods, levelled it for drainage, and ran the insulated pipes neatly across the ceiling to the outdoor unit.

More than one room?
For several rooms, the usual answer is several wall splits, each with its own outdoor unit, or a multi-split system with one outdoor unit serving a few indoor units. In Hyde Park, we installed three splits in one home, grouping the outdoor units neatly on brackets along a side wall. In Rivonia, we mounted two outdoor units high on the walls of a double-storey home, where there was no space at ground level.

Things to plan before installation
- Size. Too small and it runs flat out without coping. Too big and it short-cycles and wastes power. See what size aircon you need.
- Inverter or not. Inverter units cost a bit more but use less electricity in rooms that are cooled for hours every day. See inverter vs non-inverter.
- Outdoor unit position. Shaded if possible, with space around it, and reachable for servicing.
- Drainage. Condensate has to run somewhere sensible, like a downpipe or drain, not onto paving or a neighbour's wall. Cassettes often include a small pump to lift the water.
- Power. Larger units may need their own circuit and isolator.
- Timing in a fit-out. In a renovation, bring the aircon installer in before ceilings and lighting are finished. Pipe routes are much neater planned early.
- Rules. In complexes and estates, check body corporate or estate rules about outdoor unit placement.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cassette aircon better than a split?
For large open spaces, a cassette usually cools more evenly because it blows in four directions from the ceiling, and it keeps walls free. For a single room or home office, a wall split is usually better value and easier to install and service.
What aircon is best for a home office?
A wall-mounted split, usually 9,000 to 12,000 BTU depending on room size and sun exposure, installed so it blows across the room rather than directly at your desk. An inverter model keeps running costs down if you work from home every day.
Do cassette aircons need a suspended ceiling?
Not always. They are often fitted into a ceiling void, but they can also be hung from the concrete slab on rods, as we did on a commercial fit-out in Kempton Park.
Can you install several aircons in one home?
Yes. We install multiple wall splits with separate outdoor units, grouped neatly, or multi-split systems where one outdoor unit serves several rooms.
Where should the aircon outdoor unit go?
On a solid bracket or base, off the ground, with space around it for airflow, preferably shaded, and where a technician can reach it for servicing.
