Quick answer

A caravan or camper fridge that won't cool is usually caused by low supply voltage on 12V (thin or long cables, a weak battery), poor ventilation around the fridge, a gas leak in the sealed cooling system, or a thermostat or control fault. Check the power and ventilation first. If the fridge runs but doesn't get cold, the gas system needs testing. Absolute Repairs repairs 12V DC compressor fridges and household-style fridges fitted in caravans and campers on site across Gauteng, for a R350 call-out and a fixed repair price.

First, which kind of fridge do you have?

Caravans and campers use three main kinds of fridge, and they fail in different ways:

We repair compressor fridges, both 12V and household types, on site. For absorption fridges, we'll check the power, controls and ventilation, and tell you honestly if the cooling unit itself has failed.

Our technicians come to you anywhere in Gauteng. The call-out is a flat R350 to diagnose the fault (waived if you go ahead with the repair), you get a fixed price before any work starts, and every repair has a 6-month guarantee.

The most common causes

Low voltage on 12V

12V fridges are fussy about voltage. Long or thin cables, a weak battery, or a corroded plug can drop the voltage so far that the compressor won't start or keeps cutting out. The fridge may work at home on a power supply and fail on the road.

No ventilation

The heat taken out of the fridge has to go somewhere. Packed into a cupboard with blocked vents, the condenser overheats and the fridge struggles, especially in summer.

Gas leak

Road vibration is hard on pipe joints. Over time a joint can crack and the gas slowly leaks out. The compressor runs, but the fridge gets warmer and warmer.

Freezer cold, fridge warm

On some fridges, a slow leak shows up first as a warm fridge section with a still-cold freezer, because the little gas left runs out before it reaches the fridge part.

Thermostat or control

A thermostat stuck open, or a faulty control board on electronic models, stops the compressor from running even though power is fine.

Door seal

A torn or flattened seal lets warm air in. The fridge runs non-stop, ices up, and drains the battery faster.

Real caravan and camper fridge repairs

12V DC caravan fridge being repaired and regassed in Bedfordview
A 12V DC caravan fridge in Bedfordview: gas leak repaired, new filter drier, vacuumed and regassed.

Bedfordview, 12V DC caravan fridge. It ran but wouldn't get cold. We tested it on a 12V supply to rule out the battery and wiring, then pressure-tested the system and found a gas leak. We repaired the leak, fitted a new filter drier, vacuumed and regassed it, and it cooled properly on 12V again. Repairs in Bedfordview.

A caravan fridge in Springs being regassed with R134a after the leak was repaired.

Springs, caravan fridge-freezer. The freezer was still cold, but the fridge section wasn't cooling at all. The cause was a gas leak. We found and repaired it, then regassed the system, and both sections cooled again. Repairs in Springs.

Pre-trip checklist

  1. Run the fridge for 24 to 48 hours before you leave, on the same power source you'll use on the trip. Use a fridge thermometer, not just touch.
  2. Check the 12V cable and plug. Use a heavy enough cable for the length, and clean any corrosion off cigarette-lighter plugs and sockets. A dedicated wired socket is better.
  3. Check the battery. A tired battery can drop below the fridge's cut-out voltage overnight.
  4. Clear the vents. Make sure nothing is packed against the condenser or blocking the vents.
  5. Inspect the door seal for tears and gaps.
  6. Pre-cool the fridge and load cold food and drinks, so the fridge isn't pulling down warm stock on the road.

Storing a caravan fridge

Between trips, switch it off, clean and dry it, and leave the door slightly open so it doesn't grow mould. Before the next trip, give yourself time to test it. Problems found a week early are much easier to fix than problems found the night before.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my caravan fridge not getting cold?

Common causes are low 12V supply voltage from thin cables or a weak battery, poor ventilation, a gas leak in the sealed system, a thermostat fault or a worn door seal. If the fridge runs but doesn't cool, the gas system usually needs testing.

Can a 12V caravan fridge be regassed?

Yes. 12V DC compressor fridges have a sealed gas system like a household fridge. The leak must be found and repaired first, then the system is vacuumed and regassed.

Why does my 12V fridge work at home but not in the caravan?

Usually voltage drop. Long or thin cables and corroded plugs reduce the voltage reaching the fridge, so the compressor won't start or cuts out. A heavier cable and a direct wired socket help.

Do you repair caravan fridges on site?

Yes. We repair caravan, camper and 12V fridges at your home across Gauteng, so you don't need to remove the fridge.

Why is my camper freezer cold but the fridge warm?

On some fridges, a slow gas leak shows first as a warm fridge with a still-cold freezer. Defrost or fan faults can also cause it on frost-free models. It needs testing to know which.
