Most fridge breakdowns we see in Johannesburg trace back to one of three things: power, heat and age. Highveld summer storms bring lightning and power dips, and the surge when electricity returns after an outage is hard on control boards and inverter compressors. A fridge squeezed into a tight kitchen alcove or a hot garage also runs longer than it should, which wears out fans and start devices.
The good news is that most of these faults are repairable on site. Replacing a fridge is rarely the only option, especially for a modern side-by-side or a built-in unit that cost a lot to begin with.

Tip while you wait: move perishables to a cooler box and keep the doors closed. If the fridge is iced up, switching it off with the doors open for a few hours can get it cooling briefly until we arrive.
The KIC fridge-freezer stopped cooling after a power surge. Our tests showed the surge had damaged the compressor, the pump that circulates the gas. We replaced the compressor and the fridge and freezer are back to temperature. Surge damage like this is often covered by home insurance, and we can provide the technical report your insurer asks for.
If the fridge is under about 10 years old and the fault isn't a failed sealed system, repair is usually far cheaper than replacing it. We'll tell you honestly after the diagnosis if a repair isn't worth it.
