Stove Tripping the Earth Leakage? Causes and What to Do
Your stove switches on, then the whole house goes dark. Nine times out of ten, one hotplate or oven element is leaking current to earth. Here is how to narrow it down safely, and when to call us.

🔍 R350 call-out to inspect & diagnoseQuick answer
A stove that trips the earth leakage almost always has a heating element, usually a solid hotplate or the oven element, leaking current to the metal body. Moisture from spills or a stove that has stood unused is the most common trigger; a cracked element or burnt wiring is the next. Leave the stove switched off at its isolator so the rest of the house can stay on, and have the elements insulation-tested. Absolute Repairs does this on site across Gauteng for a R350 call-out.
Do this first
- Switch the stove off at its wall isolator (the big switch near the stove) or its own breaker on the distribution board.
- Reset the earth leakage. If it stays on with the stove isolated, the stove is almost certainly the culprit.
- Don't keep resetting it with the stove on. The earth leakage is doing its job: protecting you from a shock.
- Never pour water on a hot plate or wipe a hot element with a wet cloth.
The most common causes
Damp solid hotplate
Older cast-iron plates on Defy, Univa and similar stoves absorb moisture from boil-overs and cleaning. When switched on, the damp insulation leaks to earth. Sometimes it dries out; often the plate needs replacing.
Failed oven element
The bottom or grill element's metal sheath can crack. It often trips the power the moment you turn on the oven, or a few minutes in, once it heats up.
Stove unused for weeks
Elements can absorb moisture when a stove isn't used, especially in winter. A stove that trips only on the first use after a holiday points to this.
Burnt wiring or terminals
Heat behind the stove cooks wire insulation over the years, and loose terminals arc. You may see scorch marks on the terminal block.
Faulty plate switch
A switch with liquid inside, or a broken internal contact, can leak to earth. It often trips only on one heat setting.
Water in the isolator or cable
A wet wall or damaged supply cable can trip the circuit even with the stove disconnected. That is an electrician's job, and we'll tell you if that's what we find.
How to tell which part is tripping
Pay attention to when it trips. That's the most useful thing you can tell a technician:
| When it trips | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| As soon as the isolator is switched on | Wiring, terminal block or a switch, not an element |
| Only with one plate on | That hotplate or its switch |
| Only with the oven on | Oven element, grill element or fan element |
| After a few minutes of heating | An element cracking as it expands, or moisture boiling inside it |
| Only on the first use after a few weeks | Moisture in one or more elements |
How we fix it
We test each element and switch with an insulation-resistance tester, which applies a high test voltage and shows exactly which part is leaking. A normal multimeter can't find this. Then we give you a fixed price to replace that part. Hotplates, oven elements and switches for Defy, Bosch, Smeg, Kelvinator, Univa and most other brands are usually available in Gauteng the same or the next day.
If the stove is old and several elements are failing at once, we'll tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it.
Gas and dual-fuel stoves
Gas hobs can also trip the power through the spark ignition or, on dual-fuel cookers, the electric oven. If you're also getting a shock when lighting the burners, read our gas stove electric shock guide.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my stove trip the earth leakage when I switch it on?
Usually a hotplate or oven element is leaking current to the stove's metal body, often because of moisture or a cracked element. Switch the stove off at the isolator and have the elements tested.
Can a wet stove plate trip the electricity?
Yes. Solid hotplates absorb moisture from spills and cleaning, and the damp insulation leaks to earth. Sometimes it dries out with use, but a plate that keeps tripping should be replaced.
Is it safe to keep using the other plates?
No. Until the faulty part is found, the stove can trip at any time and may give a shock. Keep it off at the isolator.
How much does it cost to fix a stove that trips the power?
The call-out and diagnosis is R350. The repair, usually a hotplate, oven element or switch, is then quoted as a fixed price before we start.
My Defy stove trips the earth leakage. Is that common?
Very. Defy stoves with solid hotplates are the most common stoves in Gauteng, and a damp or failed hotplate is the most common cause. Parts are easy to get.
