Washing Machine Not Spinning? Causes and What to Check
A washer that fills and washes but won't spin is frustrating, but the cause is often simple. Here's what to check yourself, and which faults need a technician.

🔍 R350 call-out to inspect & diagnoseQuick answer
Most washing machines that won't spin either can't drain, so the machine won't risk spinning with water inside, or have detected an unbalanced load. Rebalance the load and clean the drain pump filter first. If the drum doesn't turn at all, the likely causes are worn carbon brushes, a broken drive belt, a door lock fault, or a motor or control board fault. Absolute Repairs repairs washing machines on site across Gauteng for a R350 call-out.
Check these first
- Rebalance the load. A single heavy item such as a bath mat, duvet or jeans can stop the spin. Spread the load out, or add a couple of towels, and run a spin-only cycle.
- Is there water left in the drum? If yes, it's a drain problem, not a spin problem. See washing machine not draining.
- Clean the pump filter. On most front loaders it's behind a small flap at the bottom front. Have towels and a shallow tray ready.
- Check the program. Wool, delicates or "rinse hold" options may have low or no spin by design.
- Turn the drum by hand with the machine off and empty. It should turn freely without grinding.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Water left in the drum | Blocked pump filter, kinked drain hose or failed drain pump |
| Tries to spin, then stops and redistributes | Unbalanced load, or worn shock absorbers on older machines |
| Drum doesn't turn at all, even when washing | Carbon brushes, drive belt, motor or control board |
| Washes slowly but won't reach full spin | Worn carbon brushes or a tacho/hall sensor fault |
| Hums but drum doesn't move (top loader or twin tub) | Capacitor, jammed gearbox or slipping belt |
| Door lock light flashing, cycle stops | Door lock or interlock fault |
| Loud grinding when it tries to spin | Drum bearings: see our noise guide |
The parts that usually fail
Carbon brushes
Brushed motors (many Bosch, Defy, Whirlpool and Samsung models) wear their brushes down after years of use. A cheap, quick repair.
Drive belt
Belts stretch or come off. If the drum turns very easily by hand with no resistance, the belt may be gone.
Door lock
The machine won't spin unless the lock confirms the door is closed. Very common on front loaders.
Motor and sensors
Direct-drive machines (LG, Samsung EcoBubble and others) use a hall or speed sensor and a stator, which can fail or be damaged by surges.
Control board
Load-shedding and power surges damage motor control circuits. We test before replacing, because boards are expensive.
Repair or replace?
Brushes, belts, door locks and drain pumps are routinely worth repairing on almost any machine. A failed control board or a drum-bearing job on an old, budget machine may not be, and we'll give you the price so you can decide.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my washing machine wash but not spin?
Most often the load is unbalanced or the machine can't drain. Rebalance the load and clean the pump filter. If it still won't spin, the carbon brushes, belt, door lock or motor control are the next suspects.
Can a power surge stop a washing machine spinning?
Yes. Surges, often when power returns after load-shedding, can damage the motor control on the main board or the motor's speed sensor. Use a surge protector on the machine's plug.
How do I force my washing machine to spin?
Choose a spin-only or rinse-and-spin program. If it won't spin on that program either, with the drum empty or lightly loaded, there's a fault to diagnose.
Is it worth repairing a washing machine that won't spin?
Usually. Most spin faults are brushes, belts, door locks or drain pumps, which are affordable repairs. We quote a fixed price after diagnosis.
