E40 is one of the most common fault codes we see on AEG Lavamat machines. The control board checks that the door interlock has locked before it will start or continue a cycle — when it can't confirm this, it stops and displays E40. This is almost always the interlock mechanism itself failing electrically or mechanically, rather than a misaligned door.
